Contraction of volume is volume of gaseous mixture taken minus , volume of gaseous products obtained in a combustion reaction. In combustion of Hydrocarbon water obtained at room temperature is in liquid state hence it's volume ignored in calculation of volume contraction.

Why Lithium is store in paraffin wax, not in kerosene oil unlike other alkali metals?
Lithium metal has low density and is a light metal than other alkali metal and therefore floats on the surface of the kerosene oil. To prevent its contact with air, it is wrapped in paraffin wax.

Why both BeCO3 and BeSO4 are unstable to heat, while BaCO3 and BaSO4 are stable.Explain?
The decomposition of a salt is promoted by the formation of a new compound with high lattice energy. From BeCO3 and BeSO4, BeO will be formed by decomposition. The small doubly charged ions will result in very high lattice energy for BeO which will help to drive the reaction. (Reaction is also favoured by an increase in entropy since a gaseous product is formed).
Why alkali metals are normally kept in kerosene oil?
Alkall metals, when exposed to atmosphere react with oxygen, moisture and CO2 present in the air forming oxides, hydroxide and carbonates. In order to prevent the reaction the alkali metals are stored under kerosene.

Why LiCl is predominantly covalent while NaCl is ionic?
LiCl is covalent because Li+ ion is smaller in size as compared to Na+ ion and hence it has high polarising power than Na+ ion, as result LiCl is predominantly covalent while NaCl is ionic.
