In IF, there are two type of bonds.
Two (I-F) axial bonds and 5 (I-F) equatorial bonds.
Five (I-F) bonds are at 72° and have more repulsion than two (I-F) bonds which are at 90°.
Thus, five (I-F) equatorial bonds are longer in bond length and are weaker, thus on heating five (I-F) equatorial bond breaks.
